CES 2025: Explore Sony XYN XR Headset’s Innovative Uses
At CES 2025, Sony's XYN XR virtual reality headset showcased its vast potential and innovative features through a variety of unique and creative applications.
Sony-Siemens Collaboration Enhances Augmented Reality
This year’s CES revealed significant advancements by tech giants Sony and Siemens, showcasing a prototype AR/VR headset focused on “spatial content creation.”
Sony’s XYN Headset: A Technological Breakthrough
At the CES press conference, Sony introduced its XYN headset, a “spatial capture solution” that employs mirrorless cameras to “scan and create photorealistic 3D objects”. Users can view these objects in various 3D production software for animation, video gaming, and other potential applications.
The prototype headset appears robust and comfortable, featuring a swivel screen for quick reality checks and a secure, comfy headband. It also comes with two new controllers developed by Sony.
The Headset in Action: An Immersive Experience
I had the opportunity to test the XYN headset and observed several 3D objects that had been scanned and manipulated. Despite some minor issues, the experience was profound. I was immersed in a pre-built animated world and could import and manipulate a crystal-like object using the spatial capture tools.
Siemens’ “Industrial Metaverse”
Siemens is taking a slightly different approach. The company announced this week that the same headset and controllers are now available for sale, but with a distinct focus. Dubbed the “industrial metaverse,” this headset was initially designed for internal use by Sony’s designers and engineers for constructing 3D spaces, utilizing Siemens software, leading to a collaboration that optimized both experiences.
Siemens now believes it is at a stage where they can market the headset and software packages to professional clients. The XR HMD is currently available for pre-order at $4,750, with shipments expected to start next month.
While Sony and Siemens have yet to prove how these tools can be broadly beneficial, their strategy is intriguing, showing that Sony’s headset is not just a consumer product but a versatile tool for various sectors and industries.
