IMAX, renowned for its immersive cinematic experiences and cutting-edge technology, is experiencing significant growth. The company continues to expand its global footprint, captivating audiences with superior image quality and redefining standards in the film industry.

TL;DR

  • IMAX achieved record global revenue in 2025.
  • Premium cinema experiences drive box-office resilience.
  • Competition intensifies with formats like Dolby Cinema.

A New Era for Cinematic Experiences

While the broader cinema industry faces ongoing uncertainty, one standout player continues to redefine what audiences seek on the big screen: IMAX. Despite a general decline in theater attendance and a North American box office that fell short of expectations—reaching only $8.87 billion, shy of the symbolic $9 billion mark—IMAX has emerged as a beacon of success. The company shattered its own records in 2025 by amassing a remarkable $1.28 billion in global revenue, cementing its role as an essential part of contemporary moviegoing.

Pushing Through a Challenging Market

This achievement is even more impressive when considering the broader context. IMAX, with less than 1% of all screens worldwide, accounts for a significant 5% share of ticket sales. CEO Rich Gelfond remarked that 2025 marked a “transformational year” for the company, highlighting both expanded reach and increased market share as evidence that both studios and filmgoers are gravitating toward the immersive qualities of the IMAX format.

Behind these headline figures, however, lies a shifting landscape. The summer season disappointed many industry watchers, with even powerhouse franchises like Marvel experiencing diminished returns. Success now appears increasingly tied to how films are presented rather than their brand recognition alone—a subtle but important shift.

The Premium Screen Race Heats Up

Several factors explain this new dynamic:

  • Event films such as Ne Zha 2, which grossed $166.7 million, and Avatar: The Seed Bearer, earning $112 million through IMAX screenings alone, lead the charge.
  • Tentpole releases are now often reserved for premium formats well in advance—tickets for blockbusters like The Odyssey can go on sale a year ahead.
  • Certain titles now generate up to 16% of their total box office from IMAX projections.

With roughly 1,800 IMAX-equipped venues globally, competitors such as Dolby Cinema are moving quickly to capture part of this high-value audience seeking exceptional cinematic experiences.

Sustained Momentum on the Horizon?

Forecasts for 2026 already predict further growth for IMAX—potentially reaching $1.4 billion in revenues—as anticipation builds around major upcoming franchises like Narnia, Dune 3, and even television crossovers such as The Mandalorian and Grogu. As both loyalty and interest continue to grow among moviegoers hungry for unforgettable outings, it seems clear that IMAX is not just weathering the industry’s storms—it is steering contemporary cinema into its next era.
