Google enters the foldable smartphone market with the Pixel Fold, featuring the Tensor G4 chip. This device combines unique performance with design, available in porcelain and volcanic black, and boasts a 6.3-inch full-screen display.

Google Pixel Fold: Innovative Tech at a Steep Price

The Google Pixel Fold has been the talk of the town since its launch. Despite some initial setbacks, its overall performance and thoughtful design have won over many. However, its high price tag remains a barrier for many consumers. Can the steep cost (€1899) of the Google Pixel Fold be justified by its premium features? The foldable comes with a cable and a USB-A to USB-C adapter, yet lacks a charging adapter – an accessory that seems essential at this price point.

The power button doubles as an efficient fingerprint scanner. Another biometric security feature allows face registration for unlocking the device using the cover screen camera. With a standard 4,650 mAh battery, it offers over 24 hours of moderate usage. However, under heavy usage (5G, Wi-Fi 7, browsing, video, photography), it may not last a full day.

A Premium Smartphone/Tablet

The Google Pixel Fold stands out by transforming into a 7.6-inch tablet when unfolded. Featuring a bright, high-resolution screen (1200/1550 nits – 60Hz to 120Hz), a precise hinge mechanism*, and an impressive array of cameras, the Pixel Fold offers an unparalleled user experience. Once folded, its compact frame measuring 155.2 mm in height, 77.1 mm in width, and 10.1 mm in thickness, and weighing 257g, fits comfortably in a trouser pocket.

*Throughout my testing, repeatedly opening and closing the phone left a solid impression of its long-term durability.

Defining Value for Money

The Google Pixel Fold offers two premium devices in one. Both its screens, one 5.8 inches and the other 7.6 inches, can independently serve as platforms for communication, information, gaming, and entertainment. The Pixel Fold boasts more cameras than typical devices: three on the back, one on the external screen, and another above the main screen.

The photos are of high quality, enhanced by some of the most advanced image-processing technologies available on Pixels. For instance, when photographing a bird, you can choose from multiple shots (at least two). Thanks to Lens, it’s possible to identify the bird, and various features enhance your shots: improve a zoomed image (up to 20x zoom), remove unwanted details like a pebble with the magic eraser, or correct blurry images. Storage options are 256 or 512 GB for your stunning 4K videos at 30/60 FPS and 1080p at 30/60 FPS.

Viewing a photo/video on the front screen and then unfolding the device displays the image instantly on the unfolded screen, providing an immersive view with a “wow” effect.

Beyond Price, User Experience Counts

Despite its high price, the Google Pixel Fold offers compelling features that may persuade some users to take the financial plunge. Android 15 integrates seamlessly with the Pixel Fold, optimized for Google apps. Additionally, Google has also focused on software optimizations for foldable screens, ensuring a consistent and enjoyable user experience.

A physical SIM slot is present, along with support for dual SIM and eSIM. Note that the included Google VPN, combined with multilayer hardware security featuring the Titan M2 chip, Tensor security core, and Trusty, ensures enhanced protection against malware, phishing, and spam in apps like Google Phone and Messages. Seven years of OS updates, security updates, and Pixel Drop updates are promised.

Ultimately, the Google Pixel Fold is a high-end experience that pushes the boundaries of what a smartphone can be in 2024. While the price may deter some, those willing to invest in this cutting-edge technology will not be disappointed. Ultimately, the choice boils down to what the buyer is willing to pay for given value.
