Concerns are growing over a potential Israeli retaliation in Lebanon following a missile attack from Hezbollah on the Golan Heights, which killed 12 people two days ago. What will be the next development in this tense situation?

Rising Tensions in Lebanon Disrupt Air Traffic

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon is affecting air travel. On Monday, July 29, 2024, flights headed to Beirut International Airport experienced cancellations and delays, notably affecting Lebanon’s Middle East Airlines (MEA).

Israel Vows Retaliation After Deadly Rocket Attack

The air traffic disruptions are directly linked to the “escalation of tensions” in the region. On Saturday, July 27, a rocket attack attributed to Hezbollah killed twelve teenagers and a child on the Golan Heights, a territory occupied by Israel.

Israel has pledged to respond “forcefully” to this lethal assault, raising fears of a renewed flare-up in the conflict between the Israeli military (IDF) and Hezbollah.

Direct Impact on Air Transportation

The incidents have triggered an immediate impact on air transportation. Lufthansa and its subsidiary Eurowings canceled three flights to Beirut scheduled for Monday afternoon, according to Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport’s information board and Flightradar24. Turkish Airlines also canceled two flights scheduled for Sunday evening.

Beirut Airport Previously Targeted

It should be noted that Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport has been targeted in the past during the Lebanese civil war and previous conflicts with Israel, including the 2006 war between Hezbollah and the IDF.
