Now launched in France, this tool sends real-time alerts to Google Maps users near fire-affected areas, prompting us to consider how such innovations are reshaping our approach to safety.

Google Steps into Wildfire Battle in France

Amid a surge in forest fires in France due to climate crisis, with an estimated doubling of fire-prone areas in Europe over the last 50 years, Google has launched its “Wildfire Detection” tool.

The Role of “Wildfire Detection”

This innovative device, powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), precisely maps fire outlines. It integrates with Google Maps and its search engine, drawing on multiple information sources including third-party satellite imagery.

Users near risk zones receive direct emergency notifications. Additionally, the tool enhances safety by identifying nearby fires on planned routes within Google Maps.

Google’s Efforts in Wildfire Management

This project is among other Google initiatives using AI to enhance its services, such as Project Greenlight, which uses AI to analyze optimal waiting times at traffic lights to improve traffic flow.

Predictive Version on the Horizon

Google is developing a “predictive” version of “Wildfire Detection” aimed at forecasting the onset and spread of wildfires by analyzing factors like vegetation density and humidity levels. Details are still under wraps.

Until then, the American company is collaborating with relevant authorities to ensure this advanced tool is available to frontline personnel like firefighters.
