Ksenia Karelina, originally from Russia and residing in the U.S. for ten years, was arrested during a visit to her grandparents in Russia. On August 15, she was sentenced for donating a small amount to a Ukrainian NGO. How did this happen?

A Harsh Punishment for an Act of Solidarity

32-year-old Russo-American citizen Ksenia Karelina was sentenced on Thursday, August 15, to a 12-year prison term by a regional court in Sverdlovsk, Ural.

The “crime” she was accused of? Sending a mere $51 to a charity aiding Ukraine, an action deemed “treasonous” by Russian authorities.

A Verdict that Shocks the International Community

The case has provoked a strong response from the White House. “This is vindictive cruelty masquerading as legal action. To label a $51 donation to distressed people in Ukraine as ‘treason’ is utterly absurd,” expressed John Kirby, a spokesperson for the White House.

The Hidden Agenda Behind the Harsh Sentence

The verdict comes as the U.S. accuses Russia of deliberately imprisoning American citizens to leverage prisoner exchanges with Western countries. Notably, the largest prisoner swap between Moscow and the West since the Cold War occurred on August 1.

Currently, Russia still holds several foreigners and dual nationals, including French citizen Laurent Vinatier, accused of illegally gathering information on Russian military activities.

An Escalating Political Repression

This sentencing is part of an increasing crackdown in Russia since the onset of the Russian offensive in Ukraine in February 2022. The number of “treason” trials, often resulting in severe penalties, is rising, affecting thousands who oppose the conflict.
