Americans Consumed 100 Trillion Megabytes of Wireless Data Last Year

Modern technology, including autonomous cars and drones, has helped achieve record numbers. Do these advancements hold the promise of a more efficient and secure future?
Wireless Data Usage Skyrockets in the U.S. in 2023
In 2023, Americans used more wireless data than ever before, exceeding 100 trillion megabytes—a 36% increase from the previous year, according to Reuters.
The Impact of New Technologies
This significant rise was driven largely by technological advancements rather than traditional means. Americans spent about 100 billion fewer minutes on phone calls than in 2022 and sent a similar number of text messages. Instead, technologies such as drones, space missions, autonomous vehicles, and precision agriculture have been the real game-changers.
The Challenge of Securing New Spectrum Bands
Despite these advancements, the U.S. faces ongoing challenges in securing new spectrum bands for wireless communications. Meredith Attwell Baker, CEO of the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA), stated, “To continue meeting the insatiable demand for wireless, drive innovation, and support America’s economic competitiveness, the wireless industry needs access to more fully powered and licensed spectrum.” In response, the White House launched the National Spectrum Strategy in November 2023 to enhance spectrum access and management.
