We can now identify images created by artificial intelligence, a technical feat that not only opens new possibilities but also raises questions about our ability to discern real from fake in the future.

Detecting AI-Generated Images: A New Technology

In collaboration with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), Google is developing technology to determine whether an image was captured by a camera, altered using software like Photoshop, or created by AI models such as Google’s Gemini.

Understanding Images: Google’s New Feature

This technology will enhance Google Search with a new feature, “about this image,” which will provide details on how an image was created or edited.

C2PA’s Role in Combating Misinformation

The C2PA, committed to combating misinformation and AI-generated images, has developed a technical standard for authentication that includes provenance data, thus ensuring digital traceability. Supported by leading companies in AI like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Adobe, this standard, though not widely adopted yet, will face its first major test when integrated into Google Search results.

Google and Standard Version 2.1

Having contributed to the latest version (2.1) of the standard, Google plans to incorporate it with an upcoming C2PA trust list. This list will help Google Search verify the origins of images. “For instance, if data indicates an image was captured by a specific camera model, the trust list helps confirm this information is accurate,” explains Laurie Richardson, Vice President of Trust & Safety at Google.

Authentication data is derived from two specific Google products: Search and Ads. “Our goal is to enhance this over time and use C2PA signals to guide our enforcement of key policies,” states Richardson. “We are also exploring ways to communicate C2PA information to YouTube viewers when content is captured with a camera, with more updates to come later in the year.”
