What happens when Saudi Arabia decides to significantly boost its investment in Nintendo?

Saudi Prince and Nintendo: A Strategic Alliance

The Saudi Arabian prince has expressed interest in Nintendo, a video game giant primarily based in the US and Japan. Although it’s unclear how this alliance will affect game content, significant influence seems unlikely.

Economic Expansion Through Video Games

Saudi Arabia is heavily investing in the video game industry as part of its economic diversification efforts. The Savvy Games Group, funded by the nation and active in various sectors including eSports and publishing, aims to turn Saudi Arabia into a video game hub by 2030.

Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan Al-Saud and Investment in Japanese Gaming

At Tokyo Game Show 2024, the Saudi prince showed increased interest in investing in Japanese video games. When asked about the possibility of upping his country’s stake in Nintendo, the prince stated: “It’s always a possibility”, noting that any such decision would align with the company’s strategy. Following this announcement, Nintendo’s stock rose by nearly 4%.

Saudi Arabia as Nintendo’s Major Shareholder

Saudi Arabia currently holds the largest share in Nintendo and has significant stakes in other gaming giants like Nexon, Capcom, and EA. Despite these investments, there seems to be no direct intention to influence game development. However, some game elements, such as those in Spider-Man 2, have been censored before their release in the country.

What Do We Think?

It’s intriguing to see Saudi Arabia heavily investing in the booming video game industry. This investment strategy reflects a desire for economic openness and diversification. However, it will be interesting to see how the country handles issues of censorship and content in the future.
