Oura Ring vs. Apple Watch vs. Fitbit: Which Tracks Sleep Most Accurately? New Study Reveals
A recent sleep tracking study compares the accuracy of the Oura Ring, Apple Watch, and Fitbit to determine which device is the most precise.
Testing the Accuracy of Sleep Tracking
In the fitness tracker industry, sleep tracking is a crucial feature. Choosing between the Oura Ring, Fitbits, and the Apple Watch for the most accurate device is challenging. However, recent scientific research has shed light on this issue.
Sleep Tracking Results Favor the Oura Ring
A study conducted by Brigham and Women’s Hospital compared the Oura Ring Gen 3, Apple Watch Series 8, and Fitbit Sense 2 against the “gold standard” of sleep assessment, polysomnography. The findings revealed that the Oura Ring Gen 3 was 10% more accurate, particularly in distinguishing between different sleep phases.
The study showed that the Oura Ring detected deep sleep with a sensitivity of 79.5%, compared to 61.7% for the Fitbit Sense 2 and just 50.5% for the Apple Watch Series 8. Unlike the Apple Watch, which overestimated light and deep sleep, the Oura Ring did not significantly under or overestimate any of the four sleep phases.
Considerations to Bear in Mind
However, it’s important to note that the study did not compare the latest devices from each brand. The Oura Ring Gen 3 has been succeeded by the Oura Ring 4, and the Apple Watch Series 10 was released in September. Additionally, although the Fitbit Sense 2 remains available for purchase, it is confirmed to be the last model of the brand, following the closure of Fitbit.com.
Overview of the Market
Despite these considerations, Oura still seems to lead in sophisticated sleep tracking data. The Oura Ring 4, for instance, claims to significantly improve accuracy, offering up to 120% more precision in measuring SpO2, crucial for sleep analysis.
In conclusion, if you’re in the market for a new sleep tracking device, the Oura Ring 4 appears to be a wise choice, especially considering its battery life and comfort.
