YouTube Tests New ‘Premium Lite’ Subscription Option

This plan will eliminate most ads at half the cost.
YouTube Revamps Its Premium Lite Offering
Video-sharing giant YouTube is currently testing a major overhaul of its Premium Lite subscription. Screenshots of the revamped service have surfaced on social media, sparking widespread reaction.
Premium Lite: An Economical Alternative
A Google spokesperson confirmed that the new subscription version is under testing in Australia, Germany, and Thailand. A key feature of this offer includes “limited ads,” meaning most videos will be ad-free except for musical content, Shorts, and non-intrusive ads during searches and browsing.
It’s important to note that the original Premium Lite subscription, first tested in Europe in 2021, was discontinued by YouTube in October 2023 after several years. Its sole benefit was the elimination of all ads, lacking the offline and background playback options available with the standard Premium subscription.
Attractive Pricing
We have confirmed that the cost of Premium Lite in Australia is set at $9 per month, about half the price of the full Premium subscription at $17 per month. This pricing aligns with the previous version of Lite. Compared to the current YouTube subscription rates — $14 per month for an individual or $23 per month for a family option — this intermediate offer could prove appealing to many users.
As a leading entertainment platform, YouTube appears committed to broadening its subscription options and catering to diverse customer preferences regarding ads and costs.
