Samsung Confirms: No Cheaper Foldable Phone, Here’s Why

Samsung has confirmed that it does not plan to offer a cheaper foldable phone, explaining that maintaining the quality and innovation of their technology does not allow for a lower-priced model.
The High Cost of Foldable Phones: A Barrier for Consumers
Foldable phones captivate many, yet their high cost remains a significant barrier to widespread adoption. Hopes that technological advancements and increased competition would lower prices have not yet been realized. According to Samsung, the Galaxy Z Fold range is unlikely to see a price drop anytime soon.
Samsung: No Democratization in Sight
With the launch of the larger, more expensive Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition—only available in South Korea—this stance is reinforced. A Samsung official stated, “Rather than viewing it as a premium product, it is designed to expand your choices. You can select according to your preferences. Currently, we do not plan to introduce a lower-priced separate product.”
Despite rumors of a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE, these were ultimately dispelled, and Samsung scrapped such plans.
Other Manufacturers Could Change the Game
Despite impressive features such as the first 200MP main camera on a Samsung foldable phone, the company is not expected to reduce its prices soon. However, rumors hint at a possible cheaper version of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 next year.
It is hoped that other foldable phone manufacturers will help drive down prices. The Motorola Razr 2024 is already on the market for $699, and the OnePlus Open is $200 cheaper than the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Nonetheless, significant price reductions seem unlikely in the near future.
