Amazon Launches Low-Cost Marketplace to Compete with Temu

Thank you, but I'm going to pass on the $20 couch.
Amazon Unveils New Online Sales Strategy
According to The Information, e-commerce behemoth Amazon is crafting a new online sales platform poised to compete with Temu, the Chinese retailer known for its ultra-low pricing.
Drastic Price Ceilings Introduced
Internal sources told The Information that the new platform, dubbed “Low-Cost Store,” will feature sharp price caps, such as:
$8 for jewelry,
$9 for bedding,
$13 for guitars,
and $20 for sofas.
These items will be shipped from the Guangdong distribution center in China.
Longer Delivery Times, Lower Costs
This strategy appears to counter Temu’s approach, which launched in 2022. Delivery times are expected to range from nine to eleven days—longer than usual—but with reduced processing fees for sellers. For instance, shipping an item weighing between 4 and 8 ounces would cost between $1.77 and $2.05 via the “Low-Cost Store,” compared to $2.67 to $4.16 through Amazon’s traditional shipping service.
A Strategic Shift
This new approach marks a significant pivot from Amazon’s main platform, which imposes no price limits. In just two years, Temu has gained notoriety for selling items of questionable quality and faced scrutiny over its use of “forced” labor. It remains to be seen whether Amazon can maintain both low prices and high standards of quality and ethics. Big Tech is on the move.
