Economic Performance Dwindles

In 2024, tech giant ByteDance, owner of TikTok, is seeing a significant slowdown in its economic performance. For the first time since 2022, its revenue growth rate has slowed and profit margins have diminished during the first three quarters of the year.

TikTok Shop Faces Challenges

The integrated sales platform, TikTok Shop, is also struggling. Its gross merchandise volume has not met targets recently. This downturn is evident not only in China but also in key international markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Southeast Asia, where ByteDance has been diversifying its revenue streams beyond video platform advertising.

Multiple and Varied Challenges

Several factors contribute to these lackluster performances. The first is a decrease in advertising spending in China, and the second is a tense geopolitical context. Additionally, the high capital costs of developing artificial intelligence and large language models have drained a significant portion of the company’s funds.

Decline in Chinese Market Growth

In China, ByteDance’s advertising revenue growth has fallen to less than 17% in the third quarter, down from 40% in the first quarter. Both the advertising and e-commerce sectors have missed their targets, contributing to the slowdown.

Increased Competition

Both in China and abroad, competition is heating up. Amid geopolitical tensions threatening TikTok with bans in the United States, ByteDance faces competition from Shein and Temu, both owned by PDD Holdings. Notably, the latter has recently expanded into Vietnam, where TikTok Shop usually performs well.

On a national level in China, the upcoming Singles’ Day shopping festival could be a turning point for ByteDance as it competes with major e-commerce players like Tmall, Taobao, and Pinduoduo.

With these challenges, ByteDance is far from the explosive expansion it experienced in recent years. How the company will adjust its strategies to overcome these obstacles remains one of the major stakes for the coming year.
