The Journey Towards Authentic Local Artificial Intelligence with Mozilla
Embracing the spirit of “local artificial intelligence”, the Mozilla Builders Accelerator program has nurtured 14 projects to fruition in just a few months. Launched last June, this accelerator emphasizes maintaining an open and accessible internet. Consequently, Mozilla Builders Accelerator is reshaping the AI concept by focusing computing resources and data on personal devices rather than the cloud.
Rigorous Project Selection
The selection process was intense. Approximately 200 individuals from 44 countries participated in this initiative. “These 14 projects stood out due to their creativity, potential impact on local AI technology, and alignment with Mozilla’s values”, stated Liv Erickson, who leads ecosystem development at Mozilla. Each selected project received up to $100,000 in funding and mentoring from Mozilla.
Focus on Innovative Projects
Three categories of projects emerged. The developed tools enhance AI model performance and adapt their use to various realities. Infrastructure projects provide solutions to simplify and amplify software development. Lastly, media projects leverage technology to make information easier to understand and engage with.
For instance, Ersilia Model Hub offers local AI/ML tools that improve access even in regions with low internet connectivity. Latent Scope, on the other hand, employs cutting-edge technology to categorize, cluster, and explore large sets of unstructured data through an intuitive interface.
