It took forever to get a spell checker for Notepad, but artificial intelligence encountered no such delays.

Tech Breakthrough in Microsoft Notepad

Microsoft is set to transform the writing experience with a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) feature called “Rewrite” in its Notepad app, reports The Verge. This tool is currently available for preview to Windows Insiders members.

Introducing the Rewrite Tool

The Rewrite function allows AI to rephrase text, tweak tone, and adjust length. Users can activate it by highlighting text, right-clicking to open a context menu, or using the Ctrl+I shortcut. A dialog box then displays AI-generated rewriting suggestions, with options to alter length, tone, and format. Those who prefer manual writing can disable this AI feature in the app’s settings, as per the official Windows blog.

Microsoft Paint Also Gets an Upgrade

Microsoft doesn’t stop there; its Paint application now includes two AI-driven features: Generative Fill and Generative Erase. The “fill” function allows users to alter and add visual elements by selecting areas and describing the desired additions. The “erase” feature lets users remove elements using a “generative eraser brush” alongside the eraser tool, according to the Windows blog.

Rapid Technological Evolution

It took over four decades to integrate a spell checker into Notepad, but just a few months to equip it with AI capabilities for rewriting and painting. This highlights the swift pace of technological advancement.
