Experts warn that digital clutter may adversely affect your mental health.

Digital Clutter: A Barrier to Mental Health

In the digital age, our inboxes are overflowing with unread emails, our messaging apps are choked with texts, and our phones are crammed with screenshots.

This phenomenon, known as “digital clutter,” impacts our mental health and productivity, experts say.

Digital Clutter and “Digital Hoarding”

Clinical psychologist Dr. Susan Albers from the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio explains that digital clutter can lead to stress and anxiety. She notes that this is a relatively new problem, one that our ancestors never encountered. When digital clutter becomes overwhelming, it can sometimes evolve into a condition researchers call “digital hoarding.”

Dr. Emanuel Maidenberg from UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine defines “digital hoarding” as the accumulation of unnecessary photos, documents, and files, which ultimately creates vast amounts of information.

How to Eliminate Digital Clutter?

According to Dr. Albers, clearing out digital clutter is beneficial for mental well-being. She suggests spending a few minutes each morning to perform a digital audit, especially for those struggling with clutter. Here are some tips to achieve this:

– Turn off unwanted notifications and unsubscribe from cluttering ads in your mailbox. Dr. Albers likens these to mental mosquitoes.
– Digital well-being is crucial, so it’s important to manage the time spent on devices. Limit the number of social media accounts you follow to reduce mindless scrolling.
– Practice digital detox for your well-being.

Taking control of our digital environment is essential for our mental health and productivity. Remember, our brains are wired to prefer clarity and simplicity over the chaos of numerous open tabs or files to sort.
