Apple plans to release the AirTag 2 in 2025, featuring an upgraded Ultra Wideband chip for accurate tracking and a secure speaker, while maintaining a design similar to the current model.

Apple Set to Unveil New AirTag Model

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports that Apple plans to release an updated version of its item-tracking accessory, the AirTag, by mid-2025. Originally launched in April 2021, the AirTag has remained one of Apple’s most enduring products without an update.

Progress on AirTag 2 Development

In his PowerOn newsletter, Gurman stated: “Back in May, I mentioned that Apple was developing a new AirTag – codenamed B589 – targeted for release around the middle of next year. This accessory has now moved forward in its manufacturing tests, and Apple is gearing up for its market launch.”

These details align with earlier forecasts that the second-generation AirTag would not emerge until 2025. Last October, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had noted that mass production of the next AirTag was pushed to the fourth quarter of 2024, which is currently underway. In January, Gurman reported that Apple had delayed this update due to an overproduction of the current AirTag model.

What’s New with AirTag 2?

The newsletter reveals that the AirTag 2 will feature an upgraded chip for enhanced location tracking, suggesting the inclusion of the next-generation Ultra Wideband chip launched with the iPhone 15 series.

Another significant update is that the built-in speaker will be more difficult to remove, a move designed to prevent unauthorized tracking. However, Gurman indicates that we should not expect a major redesign of the AirTag.

Additionally, he noted that the second generation of the AirTag will have “better range,” which should improve the precision of the location tracking feature over longer distances.
