Following a massive $4 billion investment from Amazon, Anthropic will utilize AWS artificial intelligence chips to advance its technology development.

Amazon’s Investment in Anthropic

E-commerce titan Amazon has decided to double down on its investment in Anthropic, adding an additional $4 billion to last year’s commitment of $4 billion, with an extra $2 billion for Google. Despite remaining a minority investor, Anthropic has agreed to make Amazon Web Services (AWS) its “main cloud and training partner”.

Anthropic’s Technology Choice

Prior to today’s announcement, The Information reported that Amazon intended to tie any further funding to a commitment from Anthropic to use Amazon’s internal AI chips instead of NVIDIA’s silicon. It appears Amazon has succeeded, as both companies have now separately announced that Anthropic will utilize AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips for training its future foundational models.

Deeper Collaboration

Furthermore, Anthropic has stated it will work with Amazon’s Annapurna Labs to develop future Trainium accelerators. “Through deep technical collaboration, we are writing low-level kernels that allow us to interface directly with Trainium silicon, and contributing to the AWS Neuron software stack to enhance Trainium,” the company said. Anthropic engineers will work closely with Annapurna’s chip design team to maximize computational efficiency, which they plan to use to train their most advanced foundational models.

Significant Funding for Competition

According to another recent report, Anthropic expects to spend over $2.7 billion before the year ends. Up to today, the company had raised a total of $9.7 billion. This financing provides a much-needed buffer as it seeks to compete with OpenAI and other firms in the AI sector.
