A recent study found that artificial intelligence outperformed doctors by 16 percentage points. How could this technological breakthrough potentially transform future medical practices?

When AI Outperforms Humans

A recent brief study has unveiled startling findings: ChatGPT outperforms doctors in making diagnoses.

The Study in Detail

The research involved 50 doctors—26 practitioners and 24 residents—who were tasked with diagnosing six medical cases. Some had the assistance of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, while others worked without digital support. Surprisingly, doctors without AI assistance scored an average of 74%, those with AI help reached 76%, but “ChatGPT alone achieved an average score of 90%”.

This outcome astonished Dr. Rodman, who helped design the study. Initially “shocked” to see that chatbot assistance had little effect on doctor performance, he was even more surprised to find that AI surpassed their skills.

A Necessary but Underestimated Collaboration

Ironically, AI didn’t help the doctors as much as expected because, according to Dr. Rodman, most disregarded the AI’s advice when it contradicted their own opinions. Many doctors struggle to accept that a chatbot might know better than they do.

Training as a Solution

The study highlights the critical need for training doctors to use AI. The researchers emphasize, “Advancing in technological development and staff training is essential to harness the vast potential of collaboration between doctors and artificial intelligence in clinical settings”. Thus, the future of medicine appears to lie in this synergy between human and machine.
