For the first time in over four decades, South Korea's president imposed martial law on Tuesday, only to repeal it later that night. What prompted such a drastic action?

South Korea Grapples with Unprecedented Political Crisis

In a shocking move, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on Tuesday, marking the country’s first such instance in over 40 years. The decision sparked outrage both domestically and internationally, ultimately forcing the leader to retract his statement.

The Controversial Martial Law

With his popularity already dwindling, Yoon Suk Yeol attempted to impose martial law during a surprise speech, accusing the opposition of being “hostile forces against the state” over a budget dispute.

This law, which halted political activities and placed media under control, led to massive citizen protests outside the Parliament, demanding its repeal and the resignation of the president.

Opposition and International Community React

In response, the Democratic Party, the main opposition, demanded Yoon Suk Yeol’s resignation and threatened impeachment proceedings against him. The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions called for an indefinite general strike until Yoon steps down.

Internationally, the announcement raised concerns and disapproval, notably from the United States, Seoul’s key ally against North Korea, and from China. Concerns were also voiced by the United Nations and the United Kingdom.

South Korean President Under Fire

Under mounting pressure, Yoon Suk Yeol announced on television the lifting of martial law and the withdrawal of troops from the capital.

However, the president continues to face intense scrutiny from both his own party and the opposition, who are demanding accountability. Amid this turmoil, the leader has yet to make a public appearance, underscoring the severe political crisis engulfing South Korea.
