In just one month, around 400 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo contracted the disease, prompting a WHO team to conduct field sampling. What steps will be taken next?

Mysterious Epidemic Strikes the DRC

An unknown disease has spread across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), affecting nearly 400 people and resulting in at least 27 deaths within a month. The outbreak is centered in the Panzi region, situated about 700 km southeast of the capital, Kinshasa.

Alarming Symptoms

The illness is characterized by fever, headaches, and cough, impacting individuals across all age groups, including children. Apollinaire Yumba, the provincial health minister, suggests the death toll might rise further.

WHO Intervention

In response to this critical situation, the World Health Organization (WHO) has sent a team of epidemiologists to the area. Their primary mission is to “understand the situation” and collect samples for laboratory analysis.

While awaiting test results, local residents are urged to limit travel and follow strict hygiene protocols, such as frequent hand washing.

A Country Already Hit by the Mpox Virus

The DRC has recently faced a severe outbreak of the mpox virus, leading to over 1,000 deaths in recent months. Though mpox cases are slightly decreasing, this new epidemic raises concerns in one of the world’s poorest countries.
