Rediscover the world of Foursquare and relive the excitement of the 2010s, when exploring our city took on a new dimension with each check-in. Dennis Crowley's visionary app uniquely blended the digital with reality, captivating urban imaginations.

Dodgeball: From Promising Beginnings to a Frustrating End

Dodgeball, founded in 2000 by New York University students Dennis Crowley and Alex Rainert, pioneered the concept of social “check-ins,” aiming to facilitate meetups at popular locations based on friends’ whereabouts. Google, recognizing the app’s potential, acquired Dodgeball in 2005. However, the founders’ experience at Google soured, leading Crowley and Rainert to leave in April 2007, with Crowley describing the stint as “incredibly frustrating.”

Dodgeball ceased operations in 2009 when Google’s Vice President of Engineering, Vic Gundotra, announced it would be replaced by Google Latitude within two months. Despite this, the closure paved the way for Foursquare, a tool that continues to thrive in enabling spontaneous urban discoveries.

From Dodgeball to Foursquare: A Shift to Personalized Recommendations

Post-Google, Crowley, alongside Naveen Selvadurai, developed Foursquare, a sophisticated successor to Dodgeball offering personalized location recommendations based on user preferences, thus enhancing tailored urban exploration. Unlike Dodgeball, which was limited to major American cities, Foursquare has captured a global audience, now boasting about 50 million monthly users and competing with tech giants like Google, Apple, and Facebook.

Dennis Crowley: A Creative Instinct for Innovation and Community

Dennis Crowley, a visionary entrepreneur passionate about blending digital technology with real-world experiences, extends beyond tech entrepreneurship. In 2015, he founded a semi-professional soccer club in Hudson Valley, demonstrating his blend of technology, passion, and community. Although he has stepped down as CEO, Crowley continues to play a pivotal role at Foursquare as Executive Chairman, attributing his success to following his instincts and persevering through financial challenges and external doubts, focusing on impact and experience over profit.

Foursquare: From an App to a Global Geolocation Ecosystem

Over the years, Foursquare has diversified, launching Pinpoint in April 2015, a geolocated marketing solution for advertisers, and introducing Attribution in February 2016, a tool allowing businesses to measure the effectiveness of their advertising campaigns. In March 2017, they released an SDK enabling developers to integrate their location technology into their apps. Meanwhile, Foursquare expanded into the Asia-Pacific market, partnering with entities like Tencent and Samsung, and opened offices in Singapore and Chicago, achieving over 50% annual growth between 2015 and 2017.

In 2019, the acquisition of Placed and the 2020 merger with Factual further strengthened Foursquare, transforming it into an essential tool for marketing, analysis, and geolocation, and a leading independent provider of geolocated data for global brands, advertisers, publishers, and agencies with over 105 million points of interest in 190 countries and 50 territories.
