Google Surprises with Upgrade for Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold

Google has just announced an unexpected upgrade for its Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold smartphones, promising to further enhance user experience. The new features are now available in France.

Extended Android Support for Google Pixels

Google has officially extended Android support for its Pixel 6, confirming recent rumors. However, this extension also applies to the Pixel 7 and the original Pixel Fold, which will now receive an additional two years of Android software updates, increasing their update lifespan from three to five years.

Android Updates Through 2028

This extension means Android updates for the Pixel 6 will continue until October 2026, possibly including Android versions 16 and 17. The Pixel 7 is set to receive its last update in October 2027, likely incorporating Android 18. The Pixel 6a and 7a models will receive updates until May 2027 and 2028, respectively, while the Pixel Fold’s last update is expected in June 2028.

A Move Towards Durability

While Google hasn’t specified its reasons for this decision, it likely aims to standardize support across its devices. Moreover, a growing commitment to sustainability might encourage users to keep their devices longer. Extended software support can make older devices more appealing and extend their useful life.

Additionally, this extra support could “make your old phone more valuable for trade-ins”, provided it remains in good condition.

A Pleasant Surprise for Users

Although this support extension isn’t as extensive as the seven years promised for the Pixel 8 and 9 series, it’s still welcome news. Receiving five years of Android updates instead of three is a delightful surprise, ensuring older devices won’t miss out much on the benefits of Android versions 16 and 17.
