In some cases, these apps even track your location, steal your contacts, and intercept your private messages. The Cyber Espionage Campaign

ESET’s research revealed a sophisticated cyber espionage campaign that used these apps to exploit vulnerabilities in the Google Play Store. While some of the apps were distributed directly through Google’s official marketplace, others found their way onto users’ phones through more deceptive means.

Interestingly, this campaign relied on social engineering tactics—specifically, a fake romance scam. Hackers would reach out to potential victims through popular platforms like Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp, pretending to form a romantic connection. Once trust was established, they’d ask their targets to download a malicious messaging app. These apps were designed to secretly spy on users once installed.

The Three Groups of Dangerous Apps

ESET’s findings categorized the 12 apps into three groups, each with distinct features and risks.

Group 1: Basic Spyware Apps

The first group consists of apps with basic messaging capabilities that, once installed, ask for personal details like your phone number. Whether or not you create an account, these apps run in the background, quietly stealing your contacts, SMS messages, call logs, and even the list of apps installed on your device. In some cases, they can even track your location.

One example of this type of app is Rafaqat, which had over 1,400 downloads before being removed. If you see this app on your phone, delete it immediately.

Group 2: Advanced Spy Apps

The second group includes apps that go a step further. These not only steal your personal data but can also use accessibility features to intercept communications on apps like WhatsApp and Signal. This means the hackers can secretly listen to your conversations and even intercept your notifications.

One particularly invasive app, Wave Chat, takes things even further by activating your phone’s microphone to record surrounding sounds. In addition, it can capture what you type on your keyboard and record phone calls. If you’ve ever downloaded any of these, it’s time to clean up your device.

Group 3: Non-Messaging Spy Apps

Finally, there’s the third group—a single app that’s not even a messaging platform but still dangerous. This app, which presents itself as a news app, asks for your phone number before allowing you to access its content. Once granted access, it can intercept your contacts and some of your files.
