Although Microsoft now allows Windows 11 to be installed on incompatible computers, the process is not worth it due to its complexity and potential issues that may arise.

Windows 10 Bows Out, Making Way for Windows 11

As Windows 10 approaches its final days in October next year, Microsoft is strongly urging users to upgrade to Windows 11. However, this recommendation does not apply to PCs lacking a TPM 2.0 chip. Nevertheless, it is still feasible to run the latest version of Windows on unsupported PCs.

Microsoft’s Recommendations

To alert users, Microsoft has updated its support page. The company advises against running Windows 11 on incompatible PCs. Still, there are official guidelines for installing the operating system on devices that do not meet minimum requirements, typically involving PCs equipped with a TPM 2.0 chip, a security component required for Windows 11.

The support page warns of “malfunctions” and states that these incompatible devices “are not guaranteed to receive updates.” Despite this, Windows 11 can still be officially installed and run on PCs.

Risks for Incompatible PCs

“Installing Windows 11 on a device that does not meet the minimum system requirements of Windows 11 is not recommended,” Microsoft cautions. “If Windows 11 is installed on ineligible hardware, you should be comfortable with the risk of encountering compatibility issues.”

So, should you risk damaging your device by running Windows 11? Is it worth it? For those using Windows 10 and considering an upgrade, they can check if their device is compatible using the Windows PC Health Check app. Even if your PC does not meet the minimum specifications, you can still proceed with installing Windows 11.

Time to Upgrade?

However, it may be time to consider upgrading your PC, especially given the demands of Windows 11. As Microsoft points out: “If you proceed with installing Windows 11, your PC will no longer be supported and will not be entitled to receive updates. Any damage to your PC due to a lack of compatibility is not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.”

There are plenty of options available, including the recently leaked Microsoft Surface 2025 range. For the best choices, including some great deals, look no further than the best laptops currently available.
