Google Maps now updates its database using dashcam footage. Learn everything you need to know about this development.

Google Maps Enhances Traffic Management

One of the leading mapping applications on smartphones and computers, Google Maps, is leveraging a significant innovation to continually enhance its service: the use of dashcam imagery to monitor speed limit changes and road traffic. This imagery is sourced from two partners, ensuring unmatched accuracy during travels.

Partnerships for Enhanced Accuracy

According to a recent report by Dallas Thomas, editor-in-chief at Android Police, Google has introduced a new help page titled “Collecting imagery from third-party providers (dash cam)”. The imagery is exclusively sourced from two partners: Geopost, owner of various shipping solutions including DPD, and Nextbase, the leading dashcam provider in the UK.

A Tool for Safer Driving

The primary purpose of this data collection is to monitor speed limit changes, potentially helping drivers stay updated on shifting speed restrictions. In the UK, ongoing highway works often lead to extended speed restriction zones that can fluctuate monthly. This feature, combined with the recent addition of a digital speedometer in the app, will promote better adherence to speed limits.

Privacy Compliance

Google has also clarified how it manages privacy with this new initiative. Dashcam images will only be used if the Geopost driver or the Nextbase road safety club member has explicitly agreed to participate. Furthermore, Google will not publish any dashcam footage and will blur faces, license plates, and other identifiable information before handing it over to an engineering team and AI.

Currently, this data is only being collected in the UK. However, if successful, Google is likely to expand this initiative to other regions. Nonetheless, investing in one of the best dashcams is always recommended to ensure safety on the road.
