Google Developing Smart Glasses That Support Prescription Lenses

According to reports, Google is currently developing smart glasses that will incorporate prescription lenses.
Google Re-enters the Smart Glasses Race
Despite the Google Glass setback, it appears Google is poised to take on the challenge again in the augmented reality eyewear arena.
Promising Announcements
Google has unveiled its new Android XR platform, set to support future devices like Samsung’s anticipated 2025 headset, as well as smart glasses. This update follows a series of Android AI enhancements, including Gemini 2.0 and an upgraded Project Astra, shedding light on how the “universal AI agent” could enhance smart glasses functionality.
Partnerships and Patents
Google is collaborating with various manufacturers to integrate Android XR across a broad spectrum of devices, including upcoming products from Sony, Xreal, and Lynx. Meanwhile, Patently Apple has uncovered several patents hinting at a revival of Google-manufactured smart glasses, covering a wide range of applications.
Prescription-Compatible Smart Glasses?
Among the key patents is a design for smart glasses that accommodate prescription lenses, either in-store or directly from the manufacturer. This is a significant step forward, as current AR glasses cannot substitute for prescription eyewear, which typically requires in-store customization for conditions like myopia.
Additionally, a patent drawing reveals a dual-layer lens frame: one layer for displaying data and another for the prescription lens. This design would enable wearers to integrate their specific prescriptions seamlessly.
