The e Foundation aims to revolutionize the European mobile ecosystem through Mobifree, an open-source project focused on digital sovereignty, ethics, and collaborative innovation.

The Bold Bet of the e Foundation: Redefining the Future of Mobile Technology

The e Foundation, a nonprofit organization, has set its sights on transforming the future tech landscape. In March 2023, the group launched Mobifree, a visionary project aiming to provide European citizens and organizations with new mobile software choices.

Reinventing the European Mobile Ecosystem

This pilot program is a bold endeavor to transform the mobile ecosystem through open-source software, open hardware, and open standards. It aims to provide ethical, user-centric solutions to enhance European digital sovereignty and democratize access to reliable, secure, and privacy-respecting mobile technologies.

In a landscape dominated by tech giants, Mobifree emerges as a strategic European alternative. As of 2024, mobile technologies still suffer from a lack of transparency and user control, exacerbating issues of surveillance, obsolescence, and dependency. Competing against global giants like Apple and Google, this project leverages a community-driven, open-source model, proven by successes like Linux or Mozilla. With a deadline set for November 2026, the challenge lies in attracting talent and ideas that can rival established proprietary solutions.

European Union: A Synergy for Innovation

To achieve its goals, the e Foundation has rallied partners who share its vision. From operating systems to apps and app stores, over a dozen major players such as F-droid, microG, and Delta Chat have enthusiastically joined the initiative.

A key strength of this project is substantial support from the European Commission, particularly through the NGI (Next Generation Internet) initiative, which promotes open and free technologies for a resilient, secure, inclusive, and human-centered Internet. This initiative has provided 4.4 million euros to the Mobifree project, funds to be distributed over 36 months among its partners.

Innovative Funding for Third Parties

In an effort to promote inclusion and equity, a portion of the EU funding is earmarked for third parties contributing to Mobifree’s objectives. Open calls for funding are organized and managed by the NLnet foundation.

The initial beneficiaries have been announced, including:

Android translation layer
LambdaNative F-Droid integration
OpenAGPS
Termux

Setting the Course for the European Technological Horizon

In conclusion, through the synergy of different actors and dedicated funding, the Mobifree project under the e Foundation is redefining mobile technology development standards. By creating a viable and ethical alternative to current mobile software, the digital landscape of tomorrow may well witness the emergence of a new form of technological freedom.
