Android Phone Makers Overlook Qi2 in 2024

In 2024, Android phone manufacturers missed a significant opportunity by failing to integrate Qi2 technology, leading to disappointment among their users.
What Sets Android Phones Apart
Android phones have consistently been pioneers in mobile technology, being the first to adopt 4G, 5G, USB-C (since 2015), and in-display fingerprint sensors. Their legacy in wireless charging began with the Samsung Galaxy S3 in 2012. However, their adoption of the Qi2 wireless charging standard in 2024 seemed to lag, sticking to outdated updates.
Announcing the Qi2 Standard
Introduced at CES in early 2023, the Qi2 standard promised 15-watt wireless charging (with potential for more in future updates), enhanced security, and magnetic power profiles for easier charger alignment and attachment. Essentially, Qi2 aimed to bring the convenience of MagSafe-like features to the Android ecosystem.
Android Manufacturers’ Response
Surprisingly, despite the convenience and popularity of iPhone’s MagSafe accessories, Android phone makers have been slow to incorporate Qi2 into their devices. Nearly two years post-standardization, only one Android device supports Qi2: the HMD Skyline.
The Future of the Qi2 Standard
While many Chinese manufacturers have so far shunned Qi2, brands like Oppo might lean towards proprietary technologies such as 65-watt AirVOOC wireless charging. « CNET » queried six months ago why Qi2 hadn’t been more widely adopted in Android phones. With still only one model supporting it, there is a pressing need for Android manufacturers to embrace this promising standard to prevent it from fading into obscurity by 2025.
