In 2024, mobile advertising is set to dominate digital spending, capturing 65.8% of the market at $203.61 billion, significantly outpacing desktops despite their growth.

The Rise of Mobile Advertising

A significant trend is emerging in digital advertising. Mobile ad spending is set to exceed $200 billion by 2024, reaching exactly $203.61 billion, while desktop and laptop ad expenditures will increase by 11%, reaching $76.91 billion.

A Widening Gap Between Platforms

The divide between these two platforms continues to grow. Mobile, capturing 65.8% of all digital ad spending in 2024, is expected to surge by another $100 billion to $305.70 billion by 2028. Meanwhile, desktop/laptop spending is projected to surpass $100 billion, reaching $100.15 billion in 2027.

Despite this growth, desktops and laptops will account for less than a quarter (24.9%) of total digital ad spending in 2024, a major shift from 2015 when they dominated the market with 53.7% of digital ad expenditures.

An Evolution Suggesting a New Balance

The industry is gearing up for more stable growth for these platforms in the coming years. The mobile market share appears to have stabilized and is expected to account for about two-thirds of digital ad spending through 2028.

This suggests that the market may be reaching a natural balance between platforms. Although the gap between mobile and desktop continues to widen, the anticipated growth of desktop to $100 billion by 2027 still demonstrates an intrinsic value in this format.

Ultimately, despite mobile’s clear dominance, the ongoing increase in desktop spending indicates that all devices remain vital in the current digital advertising landscape.
