Starting December 28, 2024, the European Union will officially adopt the widely used USB-C port. What everyday changes might this new standard bring?

A New Era for Electronic Devices

Starting Saturday, December 28, 2024, a new standard will revolutionize the electronics industry as the USB-C port becomes the norm across the European Union, significantly affecting our daily lives.

Farewell to Multiple Chargers

Electronics giants like Apple and Samsung will need to adjust. Gone are the days of brand-specific chargers for each new phone model. From now on, all new devices will be powered by a single, universal USB-C charger.

This requirement extends beyond smartphones to include tablets, e-readers, cameras, gaming consoles, earphones, headphones, mice, and keyboards.

A Step Forward for Environmental Protection

This rule, effective in France from December 28, 2024, aligns with the EU’s deadline. The European Parliament has mandated this standard to reduce electronic waste production.

Additionally, the European Commission highlights a “direct impact on consumer wallets”. Besides a unified charger, the regulation also standardizes fast charging across devices and mandates that new devices be sold with or without a charger. This is expected to save consumers across the EU about 250 million euros annually.

Change Is Already Underway

However, this measure does not herald a revolution. The USB-C standard, already widely adopted by electronic device manufacturers, is well established. Apple, initially resistant, has aligned by launching a new model (iPhone 15) with a USB-C port in 2023. Other competing brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Google had already embraced this charging port type.

To ensure compliance with this rule in France, the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) will monitor its enforcement at sales points. Sellers will have a period to sell off their stock of devices imported into the European territory before the regulation takes effect.
