If the Chinese app ByteDance is banned, the world's wealthiest man plans to take over the social network, potentially transforming the social media landscape as we know it.

Digital Titan Elon Musk May Acquire TikTok

Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual and the founder of SpaceX and Tesla, is poised to make another significant acquisition.

Confidential sources reported by Bloomberg suggest that Musk might buy the American operations of the social network TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, if the app is banned in the United States.

ByteDance Pressured to Sell TikTok

The U.S. government passed a law last year requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok by January 19, 2025, or face a ban in the U.S., where TikTok boasts over 170 million users. The situation has escalated to a legal tug-of-war between TikTok and Washington, reaching the U.S. Supreme Court.

U.S. authorities cite espionage and manipulation risks by Beijing, while TikTok and some organizations argue for free speech. “A clear majority of the judges seemed inclined to allow the ban,” reports Bloomberg.

Elon Musk, a Major Supporter of Donald Trump

In 2022, Elon Musk made headlines with his intent to purchase the social network Twitter, which he later renamed X after acquiring it for $44 billion. Musk is also a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, contributing significantly to his campaigns.

Bloomberg notes that a scenario considered by the Chinese government could see Musk taking control of TikTok in the U.S. and managing both companies jointly. However, these discussions are still in the early stages.

The Stakes Behind Banning TikTok

The move to ban TikTok isn’t new. Donald Trump already attempted to prohibit the app during his first term in 2020, citing national security concerns. Additionally, Musk co-founded other companies, including xAI focused on generative artificial intelligence, which thrives on vast amounts of fresh data—something social networks can plentifully supply.

Alongside his investments, Musk has also taken on political roles, with Donald Trump appointing him to lead a mission aimed at achieving massive savings in federal budgets.
