The Qi2: An Under-Adopted Wireless Charging Technology
Introduced in 2023, the Qi2 wireless charging standard has yet to see widespread adoption among Android phone manufacturers, making it challenging for consumers to find compatible devices despite the variety of accessories and external batteries available to iPhone users for generations.
Benefits of the Qi2
The Qi2 offers faster charging speeds (up to 15 watts or more in recent updates) and features magnets to ensure proper alignment and attachment of devices. Notably, “Apple, a member of the Wireless Power Consortium overseeing Qi2, utilized its MagSafe technology to help shape the standard, ensuring that compliant accessories work seamlessly with Qi2,” leading to a robust ecosystem of compatible devices.
Android Phones Compatible with Qi2
Currently, the HMD Skyline is the only officially Qi2-compatible Android device. However, the outlook is improving for 2025. Samsung has committed to producing several “Android devices that support Qi2” this year, with potential updates expected at its upcoming Unpacked event next week. Google has also indicated readiness to play a “leading role in the development of the next Qi v2.2 standard, adding its own high-power wireless charging technology to the WPC”.
An Evolving List
With the 2025 World Mobility Congress starting on March 3, updates from numerous major manufacturers are anticipated. As new Qi2-compatible phones enter the market, we will strive to keep this list as current as possible, at least until the standard becomes more common.
