ChatGPT Excels in the U.S. but Struggles in Emerging Markets

ChatGPT leads the global AI market with record downloads and a strong presence in the U.S., yet its dominance is challenged in emerging markets due to increasing competition.
The Age of AI: ChatGPT Dominates the Scene
Starting in 2024, the adoption of AI language model applications has skyrocketed. This surge in interest has catapulted ChatGPT to the top of the global market, breaking download records and securing a strong foothold in the United States. According to SensorTower, competition is heating up in emerging markets: Google Gemini now accounts for over 50% of downloads in India, while smaller AI chatbots are rapidly growing in Latin America.
In the US, by Q3 2024, Snapchat has become a favored app among users of ChatGPT and Google Gemini, with about 40% of users from each service also active on Snapchat. This trend is likely due to a younger demographic, with 25% of ChatGPT’s users aged between 18 and 24, compared to just 15% among the older user bases of Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity. Conversely, X (formerly Twitter), less popular with the youth, has drawn a larger share of Copilot and Perplexity users, about 40% being active on the platform.
ChatGPT: A Growing and Predominant Influence
The popularity of the AI chatbot ChatGPT is undeniable. From year to year, the demand for this innovative app has doubled, reaching 90 million downloads in the third quarter of 2024. Its success was further boosted by the release of “GPT-4O version”, a major upgrade that has engaged users with its advanced personalized features.

Increased Competition in Emerging Markets
Despite its exceptional performance, ChatGPT’s dominance is challenged in some regions. In India, Google Gemini has captured half of the market, leaving ChatGPT with just 32% of downloads. A similar situation is observed in “Latin America”, where the giant is losing ground to smaller players like Nova’s AI Chatbot. User preferences vary by region, influenced by targeted advertising and local partnerships.
User Engagement and Future Strategy
However, ChatGPT stands out for its rapid user adoption: in just five months, it engaged 50 million active monthly users, surpassing even giants like Disney+ and Temu. Additionally, apps like Character AI and Perplexity are captivating audiences with innovative offerings.
As we approach an uncertain future, while ChatGPT maintains a strong presence in mature markets, its ability to satisfy consumers in emerging economies will be crucial. It will need to balance innovation and localized strategies to retain its leadership. The dynamic AI market landscape underscores that the race for supremacy is far from over.
