Apple Faces Legal Storm Over ‘Forever Chemicals’ PFAS

Apple faces a class-action lawsuit for allegedly using persistent toxic chemicals in the bands of its Apple Watch.
Apple Targeted in Legal Action Over Watch Bands
Apple faces a class-action lawsuit in California, accused of false advertising about its Apple Watch bands. Allegedly, these bands contain harmful chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), referred to as “forever chemicals” due to their environmental persistence and potential to accumulate in the blood of humans and animals.
Toxic Substances in Watch Bands?
The implicated bands include the Sport Band, Ocean Band, and Nike Sport Band. The lawsuit is based on a December 2024 study which found “high levels” of PFAS in at least 22 watch bands. These chemicals could be absorbed through the skin, posing serious health and environmental risks.
Apple’s Response to the Allegations
In response to the allegations, Apple claims the PFAS-containing watch bands are safe for users. The company highlights its efforts to remove harmful chemicals from its products, claiming these efforts surpass current regulatory requirements.
Apple’s Efforts to Phase Out PFAS
Apple has announced its ongoing initiative to phase out PFAS from its products. In a November 2022 white paper, the company detailed plans to “completely eliminate” PFAS from its products and manufacturing processes. It emphasized the “significant environmental implications” of using PFAS and its commitment to thoughtful elimination without regrettable substitutions.
What’s Next for the Class Action?
A judge has yet to decide whether the class action can proceed. Meanwhile, consumers and environmental advocates await further information on the potential presence of PFAS in Apple’s watch bands.
