In 2025, Waymo will expand its autonomous driving system for trials in ten new cities, marking a significant advancement in driverless technology.

Waymo Targets Major Expansion by 2025

According to a report by The Verge, autonomous driving tech company Waymo plans to launch its vehicles in ten new cities by 2025. The ambitious expansion will start with trial phases in Las Vegas and San Diego.

An Initiative to Tackle New Challenges

This small-scale experimentation primarily aims to gather data to understand how Waymo’s autonomous driving system adjusts to new environments. These include regional driving habits, specific weather conditions, and unique city features. “We are looking for locations that will test our system and are very, very different,” stated Nick Rose, Waymo’s product manager for expansion efforts.

System Validation Under Various Conditions

Las Vegas poses a real challenge with its heavy traffic and chaotic drop-off zones near hotels and casinos. Similarly, San Diego, while akin to other cities where Waymo already operates like Phoenix, will test the system’s functionality “without a wealth of prior driving data”.

The Need for Testing in Multiple Cities

It is crucial for Waymo to trial its service in diverse cities to account for unique local traffic and weather conditions. Moreover, these tests are essential to anticipate and address potential discrepancies that could disrupt driverless systems. For instance, emergency vehicles like fire trucks and ambulances can differ from one city to another. This expansion is a critical step for the company to ensure that driverless cars are ready for widespread public use.
