Elon Musk Announces Tesla’s Robotaxi Service Launch in Austin this June

By 24matins.uk,  published 30 January 2025 at 14h45.

Tesla Unveils Its Robotaxi Service

During a recent earnings call for Tesla’s 2024 financial year, Elon Musk sparked interest with an announcement about a new robotaxi service launching in Austin. According to TechCrunch, these driverless vehicles will be equipped with Tesla’s unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, which is still pending release.

A Gradual Rollout

The robotaxi service will begin with Tesla’s internal fleet in Austin by June, followed by an expansion across the U.S. Subsequently, Tesla owners will have the option to add their vehicles to the fleet, akin to Airbnb’s model for real estate. However, Musk noted that the company aims to address potential challenges such as billing operations and precise stopping of robotaxis upon request.

FSD Software in the Works

As part of this initiative, Tesla also plans to release its unsupervised FSD software in California and other U.S. regions by year’s end. However, given Musk’s history of optimistic timelines, this timeline should be approached with caution.

Competition Already Present

Tesla is not alone in the robotaxi arena. Waymo has already started offering fully autonomous rides to select users in Austin by late 2024 and aims to fully launch the service in the city this year. With these developments, the future of EV transportation looks thrilling. Musk’s 2019 forecast that Tesla would have “over a million robotaxis on the roads” within a year now poses the intriguing question: what does the future really hold for robotaxis? Only time will tell.
