Sensational Discovery of New Giant Crustacean Dubbed the “Darth Vader of the Seas”

In January, researchers discovered a new species of giant crustacean in Vietnam, dubbed "Bathynomus vaderi" after the iconic Star Wars villain. What other scientific discoveries might this year hold?
A Remarkable Scientific Discovery
Researchers have made a stunning discovery: a new species of marine crustacean has been identified in Vietnam. This is no ordinary crustacean; it is a giant isopod, measuring about thirty centimeters in length and weighing up to one kilogram.
A Crustacean Worthy of Star Wars
The name of this new species, Bathynomus vaderi, echoes an iconic character from the Star Wars saga: Darth Vader. Indeed, the crustacean sports a “helmet” reminiscent of the helmet worn by the famous villain from the distant galaxy. This fifth species of giant isopodes from the genus Bathynomus joins a list already including Bathynomus affinis, Bathynomus decemspinosus, Bathynomus doederleini, and Bathynomus jamesi.
A Fortuitous Discovery
The discovery came about through the local seafood trade. Indeed, the specimens were collected by Vietnamese fishermen in the South China Sea. Among the large series of specimens collected, six stood out due to their distinctive physical characteristics, which led to their identification as a new species.
The Bathynomus vaderi: A Unique Species in Vietnam
The Bathynomus vaderi has only been discovered and is known in Vietnam. Researchers have not been able to determine the exact fishing location, as the fishermen only indicated that they were caught in the deep waters off Vietnam, near the Spratly Islands.
