Most Android devices support RCS, but iPhone compatibility varies by carrier. Activation requires adjustments in the phone's settings. Have you enabled RCS on your iPhone yet?

The Future of SMS/MMS

The RCS (Rich Communication Services), heralded as the future of SMS/MMS, marks a significant breakthrough in the communication industry. This new international standard protocol allows the exchange of enhanced, multimedia, and interactive messages. It offers features akin to popular instant messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, but without the need for a specific app, representing a major leap in mobile communication.

Device Compatibility with RCS

Most Android devices can switch to RCS through their Messages app, driven by Google’s support for its development. However, note that some older phone models may not be compatible. For iPhones, compatibility depends on the carriers. Apple has incorporated this new feature into its iOS 18 mobile operating system, but it is up to each carrier to make it available to their subscribers.

Carriers and RCS

In France, SFR was the first carrier to offer RCS with the launch of iOS 18 in July 2024. It was followed by Free with the iOS 18.2 update in December 2024, and by Bouygues Telecom since December 12. However, Orange has not yet announced any deployment plans, leaving its subscribers still reliant on traditional SMS/MMS.

How to Switch to RCS?

Switching to RCS is straightforward from your mobile settings, whether on an Android device or an iPhone. For Samsung or Google device users, this can be done through the Messages app. For iPhone or iPad users, it is managed through the device settings.

But worry not, SMS/MMS will not be disappearing anytime soon. RCS is here to enhance the existing options, but SMS and MMS remain active. This is an evolution, not a revolution.
