Google had to modify its Super Bowl ad at the last minute, entirely due to Gemini.

Google Fixes Cheese Error in Super Bowl Ad

The Super Bowl is a high-stakes event where ads can cost upwards of $8 million.

The importance of accurate information in these commercials is crucial to avoid any embarrassment, which is why Google had to amend its Super Bowl ad due to a mishap with its AI.

Cheese Confusion

The Verge reported that Google had to alter its Super Bowl advertisement for Gemini because of “incorrect information about cheese”.

The error involved Gouda cheese, which Gemini claimed accounted for “50 to 60% of global cheese consumption”. This statement is unusual, even for a cheese enthusiast. In reality, Google search results suggest that the world’s most consumed cheese is likely mozzarella, popularized by pizza.

A Tough Defense for Google

Jerry Dischler, president of Google Cloud apps, defended the original text on X by asserting the error was not a hallucination since “Gemini is web-based”. He also highlighted that Gemini’s results include sources that users can check themselves.

However, these sources were not visible in the advertisement. The erroneous information might have stemmed from a site called Cheese.com, which offers numerous cheese facts without citing sources for its claims.

The Role of AI in Information Dissemination

Gemini’s advertisement includes a disclaimer stating that the results are “not intended to be factual”. This is a significant issue. It’s problematic enough that Google’s AI pulls incorrect information from unreliable sources, but presenting these details without clearer warnings is a surefire way to spread misinformation.

This is a critical consideration when searching the web, especially if an AI provides only a snippet of the available information. Because you never know if it’s just feeding you false information that ranks well on search engines.

In conclusion, it’s vital to always verify the information we find online, as even sophisticated AIs like Gemini can err.
