Millions of Mac owners are strongly urged to increase their vigilance against malicious software designed to steal their personal information.

Mac Malware Risks on the Rise

The 2025 State of Malware report by Malwarebytes warns Mac users to be extra vigilant this year. The report outlines various threat types that Mac, Windows, and Android owners should anticipate, highlighting an expected rise in macOS infostealers.

Evolving Malware Threats

Traditionally, Mac users relied on Apple’s robust security and macOS’s built-in antivirus, XProtect. However, with AI’s help, malware has become more sophisticated and perilous. The emergence of macOS stealers, malware capable of extracting sensitive data like credit card numbers and personal details, puts Mac users nearly on par with their Windows counterparts in terms of vulnerability this year.

Guard Against Infostealers

Infostealers target both personal and professional devices, stealing data such as passwords, authentication cookies, and cryptocurrencies, which can be exploited by cybercriminals to access further sensitive information, penetrate secure resources, or craft social engineering attacks. Notable infostealers like Poseidon and Atomic Stealer can extract cryptocurrencies from over 160 different wallets, steal web browser and password manager credentials, including those from Bitwarden or KeepassXC, and even snatch VPN configurations like those from Fortinet and OpenVPN.

How to Protect Yourself?

The silver lining is that most macOS infostealers, like many Mac-based malwares, require deception or misleading tactics to be installed. Thus, you are your first line of defense. Your best protection is to exercise extreme caution regarding where you download or acquire your software from. Opt for the Mac App Store or only from legitimate, trusted developer websites. Ensure your macOS devices are equipped with the best Mac antivirus software, and never click on links from unknown or unexpected sources.
