Like Google Maps, Apple Maps has now renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, signifying a shift in how tech giants label geographical features.

A Controversial Name Change

A significant shift has occurred in digital mapping as Apple Maps follows Google Maps in renaming the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America.”

Complete Elimination of “Gulf of Mexico”

This change is not just a simple rebrand for American users. Apple has entirely removed any reference to the “Gulf of Mexico” from Apple Maps, regardless of the user’s location.

A Global Modification

“We are implementing these changes globally, starting with the United States today [February 11, 2025],” confirmed an Apple spokesperson. This statement highlights the extensive nature of this change.

Interestingly, Google Maps still shows the “Gulf of Mexico” for American users, while international users see both names.

Possible Reasons for the Change

Several factors might explain why Apple and Google have made these changes discreetly. Potential tariff threats on company products, pressure from Republican lawmakers, and a recent update from the Geographic Names Board could have been decisive factors.

A Point of Contention Between the US and Mexico

The renaming remains a contentious issue between America and Mexico. President Trump has the authority to alter the registered name in US databases, although this does not mean other countries must recognize this name change.

Microsoft has also confirmed that Bing Maps will adopt the new name.
