Baidu Launches Ernie Bot: China’s AI in the Innovation Battle

Amidst fierce competition, Baidu will make its Ernie Bot chatbot free starting April, marking a strategic move that intensifies the tech battle in China's artificial intelligence market.
Rivalry Heats Up in China’s AI Market
Chinese internet research giant Baidu is making a bold move by offering its Ernie Bot service for free starting April 1st, in a strategic bid to expand the use of its AI models. This comes as the booming market sees a surge in competition, with innovative newcomers like DeepSeek emerging.
Enhanced Performance of Ernie Bot
Baidu ensures that both desktop and mobile users will enjoy free access to its large-scale language models (LLM) Ernie, reflecting ongoing “improvements and cost reductions in inference” of the bot, according to a company statement. These LLMs underpin generative AI services such as ChatGPT from OpenAI and Ernie Bot.
Escalating Competition
Baidu’s initiative highlights the intensifying competition within China’s AI market, where significant strides have been made by Alibaba and DeepSeek. Notably, the bot named “Wenxiaoyan” in mainland China is a Baidu product. The company has introduced a feature called Deep Search that enhances the AI’s ability to think, plan, and respond. This feature will also be available for free from April 1st.
The Future Stakes of AI
The announcement follows shortly after Baidu co-founder Robin Li Yanhong predicted a surge in AI applications by 2025, underscoring the rapidly growing importance of artificial intelligence. “It is being swiftly deployed across various industries and scenarios,” he stated. Baidu’s AI initiatives, such as the public chatbot launched in March 2023, affirm its ambitions amidst fierce competition. The availability of new models has sparked a “price war” in LLMs, opening up new prospects for the Chinese AI market.
