The testing phase for Gemini on Google Home has concluded. Learn how to use it effectively in your daily life.

Google Home and Gemini: A New Era for Smart Device Control

Four months after its initial preview, Google Home is now available on the Gemini app for both Android and iOS. Powered by generative AI, this innovation allows for a more conversational approach to controlling your smart home devices than the rigid voice commands of the past.

The Benefits of Conversational Commands

Gemini’s application offers increased flexibility in how you phrase your requests while enhancing accuracy. For instance, you might ask Gemini to turn on all lights except the kitchen one, then adjust to include it later. For early adopters of smart speakers, this represents a significant shift. Previously, only very specific phrases could manage smart home instructions.

How to Use Google Home with Gemini

Once activated in Gemini, you can control lights and other devices right from your phone’s lock screen. For more sensitive operations, such as managing smart locks, your phone redirects you to the Google Home app.

While using Gemini might seem less straightforward than using a Nest speaker, its integration is slightly more complex. Not all models are compatible, requiring a Nest Aware subscription and Voice Match activation. However, for most users, integrating the Gemini app provides a simple way to harness Gemini’s conversational benefits for smart home interactions.

Activating Google Home in Gemini

Whether you’re on an iPhone or one of the top Android phones, activating Google Home in Gemini is straightforward. Just open the Gemini app, click on your profile avatar at the top right of the screen, and select “Extensions.” Scroll down to “Device Control” and activate Google Home. Then agree to “Connect Google Home.”

With Gemini and Google Home, numerous features are at your disposal. You can turn lights on or off, adjust brightness, dim them, or change their color. Thermostats can be set to cool or heat to a specific temperature or by a few degrees. Connected devices such as vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and coffee makers can be programmed to start or stop as needed.
