After spending three days in the hospital, Pope Francis' clinical condition is being described as "complex," raising numerous concerns about his health.

Pope Francis: Extended Hospital Stay

Pope Francis, aged 88, is currently hospitalized due to a respiratory infection he has been battling for over a week. The Vatican announced on Monday, February 17, 2025, that the Pontiff will remain in the hospital “as long as necessary.”

A Complex Clinical Situation

The Vatican describes the Pope’s clinical situation as “complex.” Recent tests have identified a polymicrobial respiratory infection, necessitating a change in his treatment. The Vatican stated, “All tests conducted to date present a complex clinical picture that will require appropriate hospitalization.”

Suspended Activities

Due to his health, Pope Francis has had to forgo his weekly duties, including his usual Sunday prayer with pilgrims at St. Peter’s Square and a special mass for artists during the Catholic Church’s jubilee year. Furthermore, his scheduled visit to the Cinecitta film studios in Rome on Monday has been canceled.

Active Despite Hospitalization

Despite being hospitalized, Pope Francis continues to engage with his followers. He reportedly phoned members of a Catholic parish in Gaza, as reported by Italian broadcaster Mediaset. A parish member noted that the Pope was “in good spirits” though he seemed “a bit tired.”

Despite the complexity of his health condition, Pope Francis expressed his gratitude for the support he has received during this challenging time. He wrote on Sunday: “Thank you for the affection, prayers, and warmth with which you accompany me these days.”
