HMD Advocates Disconnecting with “Shut the Phone Up Sunday” Initiative

In response to digital overload, HMD advocates for a weekly smartphone detox, promoting this with minimalist phones and practical tips to help users disconnect.
HMD: A Call for Disconnection
It’s hard to deny the profound impact smartphones have on our daily lives, often cluttered with relentless notifications. In response, HMD has launched a bold initiative called ‘Shut the Phone Up Sunday’, starting February 16, 2025. This initiative encourages people to turn off their smartphones every Sunday to take a break from the digital hustle.
The Digital Detox Movement
Digital detox is a well-known term that describes taking a voluntary break from digital devices. Generation Z, known for being “chronically online”, is embracing retro gadgets like flip phones as a break from smartphones. On TikTok, the hashtag #bringbackfliphones has garnered a remarkable 61 million views.
A study by audience platform GWI found that Generation Z is 24% more likely than average to feel that social media has caused them anxiety, making it increasingly crucial to maintain healthy relationships with our smartphones and social media.
Tips for Your First Digital Detox
Spending a day without your smartphone might seem daunting. That’s why HMD has teamed up with Arne Mathisen, entrepreneur and owner of Dumbphone.dk, to offer some advice:
- Don’t go it alone. It’s easier to take the first step when surrounded by others who share the experience.
- Don’t rely solely on willpower. Try to remove as many temptations as possible, perhaps by using a simplified phone or activating a relaxation mode on your current phone.
- Be prepared to feel uncomfortable initially. It’s an unfamiliar sensation.
Phones Designed for Disconnecting
HMD offers several phones designed to aid in digital disconnection, including the HMD Skyline and the HMD Barbie™ Phone. The Skyline features a digital relaxation function, allowing users to block notifications or limit access to certain apps. The Barbie™ Phone, on the other hand, provides a simpler tech experience with a bright pink design inspired by the iconic doll.
