Zelensky Willing to Resign for Ukraine’s Peace and NATO Membership

Amidst the war in Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky shows unwavering determination, stating he is willing to resign if it ensures peace in his country and aids its integration into NATO.
Willing to Step Down for NATO Membership
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Sunday that he would resign if it would secure Ukraine’s NATO membership and deter further Russian aggression. His statement was a retort to Donald Trump, who had labeled Zelensky a “dictator”.
“If my stepping down is what you truly need, I am ready. (…) I can trade (the presidency) for (membership in) NATO,” Zelensky declared.
Promising Dialogue Between Putin and Trump
The Kremlin described the dialogue between Vladimir Putin and the American president as “promising”. Another meeting between Russian and American diplomats is set for next week, following their February 18th encounter in Saudi Arabia.
In this context, the Ukrainian president urged the United States to provide security guarantees to protect Ukraine against any future Russian aggression.
Essential Security Guarantees
“Security guarantees from Trump are crucial,” Zelensky emphasized. He also discussed the deal concerning the exploitation of Ukraine’s strategic minerals, demanded by the American president as compensation for aid. Zelensky stated that negotiations were advancing but refused to sign an agreement that would bind the Ukrainian people for generations.
Amid Russian threats and shifting American stances, Europeans are rallying to support Ukraine. A special European summit has been scheduled for March 6 by Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, to discuss the Ukrainian situation.
