Shanghai Emerges as New Hub for Open-Source AI in China

Boosted by the growth of DeepSeek, Shanghai is emerging as a hub for open-source AI, blending industrial ambition with community commitment to establish an innovative, self-sustaining ecosystem.
Shanghai Rides the Open-Source AI Wave
In Shanghai, the goal is ambitious: to build a self-sustaining open-source Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem. This initiative follows the resounding success of DeepSeek‘s models, which have redefined the global competitive landscape in AI.
A Community of Enthusiastic Developers
The Global Developer Conference, a key event for the AI community held in Shanghai, attracted numerous open-source developers from across China. The excitement was tangible as these tech enthusiasts explored the potential of AI, spurred by DeepSeek’s globally acclaimed eco-friendly models. Demonstrations spanned from robotics to virtual reality glasses.
Commitment to the Open-Source Ecosystem
During the event’s opening ceremony, Chen Jie, the Deputy Mayor of Shanghai, stated: “We are set to enhance the open-source ecosystem, bolster the service system for open data and models, and continue building the open-source community”.
By 2024, Shanghai’s AI industry had surpassed 450 billion yuan (approximately 62 billion US dollars), with 60 major models registered with China’s Cyberspace Administration. It’s worth noting that in China, AI models must be registered with the internet regulator before public deployment.
The Final Word: Open-Source
Open-source was the central theme of the conference, the first major sector gathering since Hangzhou-based startup, DeepSeek, rose to prominence. On Friday, the company announced it would make five code repositories public, affirming its commitment to open-source in the AI realm.
