Sony Unveils AI-Powered PlayStation Character

During an impressive demonstration, Sony unveiled a PlayStation character powered by artificial intelligence.
A Leap Forward for AI in the Gaming World
A revolution is underway in the video game industry. Sony, the technology titan, has successfully incorporated artificial intelligence (AI) into a PlayStation character, Aloy, from Horizon Forbidden West.
Realistic Interaction Between Player and Character
In a since-removed demo, Aloy could engage in real-time conversation with players using synthesized voice and facial movements. Following a brief pause after a question about her condition, she responded that she was “quite well, despite a sore throat.” This showcased the technology’s effectiveness in both controlled demos and the full game Horizon Forbidden West.
Ongoing Technology Development
To create this prototype, Sony employed multiple models, including GPT-4 and Llama 3, to enhance decision-making and dialogue capabilities. Additionally, the company utilized its proprietary Emotional Voice Synthesis (EVS) and Mockingbird technology for speech generation and audiovisual animation, technologies about which Sony has yet to speak extensively in public.
A Technological Race with NVIDIA and Microsoft
Sony is not alone in advancing this technology. NVIDIA and Microsoft are also developing similar technologies. NVIDIA has used its ACE technology suite to animate game characters with AI, creating AI-powered conversations for NPCs (Non-Player Characters). Ultimately, the future of video games appears headed towards ever more realistic interactions with characters, driven by the progress of AI. A revolution that is just beginning.
